Satellite-based augmentation services (SBAS) and positioning, navigation, and timing (PNT)

Viasat delivers secure, reliable, and precise navigation for aviation and maritime missions.
Highly accurate GPS data to help maximize safety and improve efficiency

Our SBAS and PNT services combine ground monitoring data with satellite connectivity to provide navigational data with positioning down to a few centimeters of accuracy — rather than the few meters accuracy provided by standard GPS.

The system gives operators greater trust in their onboard instruments, particularly when they may not be able to physically see a runway or other obstacles due to inclement weather for improved operational safety.

How it works

Geographically-distributed Ground Monitoring Stations track GNSS/GPS satellite signals and transmit those measurements to a central Ground Processing Center, which computes correction data and integrity information – the augmentation data/information – concerning each of the GNSS/GPS satellites.

Data is sent to Ground Uplink Stations(s) which transmit(s) a signal through a Navigation Transponder embarked on our GEO Satellite(s) for broadcast to the Users. The User Receiver combines the GNSS/GPS direct measurements with the additional augmentation data/information in real-time and is able to compute a trusted (high integrity) and more precise position.

Viasat is currently supporting (a) SouthPAN (AUS/NZ) using I-4F2 and in future I-8F1, and (b) UK SBAS Testbed using I-3F5. Viasat is open to discuss and evaluate the use of our other current and future in-orbit navigation assets.
